Energy calculated. A [1]chart accompanying the study shows the breakdown
by country. The new figures mean that [2]levels of greenhouse gases are
higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four
years ago. It is a 'monster' increase that is unheard of, said Gregg
Marland, a professor of geology at Appalachian State University, who has
helped calculate Department of Energy figures in the past. The question
now among scientists is whether the future is the IPCC's worst case
scenario or something more extreme."

recently. The 25-year-old resident of San Jose, California, says he found
the first one about three weeks ago on his Volvo SUV while visiting his
mother in Modesto, about 80 miles northeast of San Jose. After contacting
Wired and allowing a photographer to snap pictures of the device, it was
swapped out and replaced with a second tracking device. A witness also
reported seeing a strange man looking beneath the vehicle of the young
man���s girlfriend while her car was parked at work, suggesting that a

how to fix the world's economic (and social, environmental, ...)
problems. It is even trialling new forms of 'open' democracy. Trouble is,
it's easy to criticize the physical occupiers for being unrepresentative
of the general population ��� and much of their debating time is spent on
practical rather than policy issues. Well-meaning but naive occupiers
could be susceptible to exploitation by the political establishment and
vested interests. In the UK, [0]virtual occupiers are using Google
Moderator to propose and debate policy in the comfort of their homes
(where, presumably, it is easier to find out stuff you didn't know).
Could something like this be done on a massive scale (national or global)
to reach consensus on what needs to be done? How do you maximize
participation by 'normal folk' on complex issues? What level of
participation could be considered quorate? How do you deal with [1]block
votes? What can we learn from electronic petitions and [2]Iceland's
crowd-sourced constitution? Is the 'Occupy' branding appropriate? What
other pitfalls are there? Or are existing models of democracy and
dictatorship fit for purpose?" One issue I see with a global version of
something like this is all of the people in the world who haven't even
heard of the Internet.

Today Mozilla [0]announced the launch of Firefox 8.0. The headline
features this time around include adding Twitter as a search bar option,
tab loading tweaks, and the default disabling of addons installed by
third-parties. "Sometimes you download third-party software and are
surprised to discover that an add-on has also installed itself in your
browser without asking permission. At Mozilla, we think you should be in
control, so we are disabling add-ons installed by third parties without

Soon the loud passenger who's had too much to drink on your red-eye
flight will be the least of your travel worries. Ryanair Airlines chief
Michael O'Leary plans to launch an app that will allow passengers to
[0]watch porn on their tablets and smartphones during flight. Mr O'Leary
told the Sun: "I'm not talking about having it on screens on the back of
seats for everyone to see. It would be on handheld devices. Hotels around
the world have it, so why wouldn't we?" Best of all, the app could also
be used to gamble or play games in case you got bored during the speaking
parts of your in-flight adult movie.

U.S. Government's networks in an increasingly hostile world. From the
article: "The Pentagon's far-out research agency and its brand new
military command for cyberspace have a confession to make. [1]They don't
really know how to keep U.S. military networks secure. And they want to
know: Could you help them out? DARPA convened a 'cyber colloquium' at a
swank northern Virginia hotel on Monday for what it called a 'frank
discussion' about the persistent vulnerabilities within the Defense
Department's data networks. The Pentagon can't defend those networks on
its own, the agency admitted."

With his first accepted submission, [0]billakay writes "A recently
open-sourced experimental Linux infrastructure created by Bell Labs
researchers allows 3D rendering to be performed on a GPU and [1]displayed
on other devices, including [2]DisplayLink dongles. The system
accomplishes this by essentially creating '[3]Virtual CRTCs', or virtual
display output controllers, and [4]allowing arbitrary devices to appear
as extra ports on a graphics card." The [5]code and instructions are at
GitHub. This may also be the beginning of good news for people with
[6]MUX-less dual-GPU laptops that are currently unsupported.

version of its famous humanoid robot, Asimo. Its appearance didn't change
much, but the new robot is lighter, faster, and stronger. It can walk on
uneven surfaces, run backwards, and even jump on one foot. The new

recognition to interact with people. Honda's big push is clearly in the
direction of making Asimo more autonomous, and useful, in human
environments."

Technicolor Research to design and develop image analysis tools to

YouProve, compares original images to create a trust certificate that can

changes (PDF) between the two. This can be of particular importance when
reviewing large amounts of crowd-sourced content to see if image
