First time accepted submitter Red_Chaos1 was the first to write with news
that, as of around 06:30 UTC, the NYPD appears to have [0]begun removing
the encampment of Occupy Wall Street. At 06:34 UTC the Mayor's office
issued a tweet declaring: "[1]Occupants of Zuccotti should temporarily
leave and remove tents and tarps. Protesters can return after the park is
cleared.". Around 07:15 UTC the first of several large dumpsters were
deposited and the police began throwing tents and other debris into it.
Reports also indicate that a [2]Long Range Acoustic Device is on the
premises. The police are using helicopters and physical barriers to
prevent news coverage, but the Occupiers are [3]streaming the events ([4]alternative
stream; #occupywallstreet on irc.indymedia.org is also rather active for
those who don't fancy flash or twitter.) As of 09:15 or so, the situation
according to those near NYC is that the park has more or less been
cleared.

probably not be working come morning. Quoting the source: "Today, we
managed to crack open Siri's protocol. As a result, [0]we are able to use
Siri's recognition engine from any device. Yes, that means anyone could
now write an Android app that uses the real Siri! Or use Siri on an iPad!
And we're going to share this know-how with you." Basically, Siri sends
the data to the processing server using non-standard HTTP extensions. Of
note is that the audio is encoded using [1]Ogg Speex.

EmagGeek writes "My wife recently started back to school to finish her
4-year degree, and one of the things that we've been considering is
procuring for her some kind of tablet that would enable her to take notes
in class and save them electronically. This would obviate the need to
carry around a bunch of paper, and could even be used to store
e-textbooks so she doesn't have to lug 30lbs of books around campus. At
minimum, she would have to be able to write freehand on the tablet with a
fine-point stylus, just like she would write on paper with a pen. We've
seen what we call those 'fat finger' styli and found that they are not
good for fine writing. Having become frustrated with the offerings we've
tried so far, I thought I would ping the Slashdot Community. Any
suggestions?"

(Ice Cream Sandwich) is now available. ... This is actually the source
code for version 4.0.1 of Android, which is the specific version that
will ship on the Galaxy Nexus, the first Android 4.0 device. In the
source tree, you will find a device build target named "full_maguro" that
you can use to build a system image for Galaxy Nexus. Build
configurations for other devices will come later.' " Once nice

consider HTML5 to be a better technology for the future than its own Flex
platform, causing frustration among developers who have used the platform

An anonymous reader writes "Yesterday, the [0]final Raspberry Pi printed
circuit board (PCB) layout was revealed. The word 'packed' comes to mind
as this is one very complicated looking board. The reason for that is
just how much Raspberry Pi has strived to save money on the machine by
using complex routing to keep things small and cheap. The Raspberry Pi
team don't believe the design is going to change again unless they missed
something. With that in mind, they revealed the final board is exactly
the same size as a credit card, measuring 85.65 x 53.98mm."

parts of north-eastern Japan [1]exceeds levels considered safe for
farming. The findings provide the first comprehensive estimates of
contamination across Japan following the nuclear accident in 2011. An
international team of researchers took measurements of the radioactive
element caesium-137 in soil and grass from all but one of Japan's 47
regions. The researchers estimate that caesium-137 levels close to the
nuclear plant were eight times the safety limit, while neighbouring
regions were just under this limit."

From reader Leebert comes this notice: NASA will hold a conference this
afternoon to explain the [0]process the agency will use to select the
next class of astronauts. According to the announcement, "NASA will
recruit its next astronaut class through the federal government's
USAJobs.gov website. The class of 2009 was the first astronaut class to
graduate in a new era of space flight following the final mission of the
space shuttle. A new fleet of human spacecraft is in development by
commercial companies to deliver crews to the International Space Station.
NASA also is developing spacecraft to send humans on missions of
exploration far away from our planet." Says Leebert: "I plan to apply,
because I want to be able to say: 'Not everybody can be an astronaut. I
know, they sent me a rejection letter.'"

and cable companies will sell wholesale bandwidth to independent ISPs on
a monthly basis. Independent ISPs will have to determine in advance the
amount they need to serve their retail customers and then manage network

companies can continue to charge independent ISPs a flat monthly fee for
wholesale access, regardless of how much bandwidth their customers use.

jailbroken iOS devices for a long time, there was no way to use it if you
did not want to lose your warranty. Now it looks like Apple has approved
a Web browser for the iPad called [0]Covert Browser, which includes a Tor
client. If you look at the first screenshot on [1]the author's page it
looks like you can even select the Exit node. According to App Shopper
[2]it already hit place 64 in the iPad/Utilites category." And from
another (of course) anonymous reader comes a link to [3]CmdrTaco's take
on another instance of Tor breaking into the world of "real users." As he
notes, the [4]Tor Cloud Project has posted simple instructions for
installing EC2 Tor nodes using free-tier VMs (or paid nodes for roughly
$30/month).

of the IRS to implement secure IT practices. From the article: "The
Government Accountability Office has blasted the Internal Revenue Service
for [0]failing to implement stronger security measures after a succession
of dismal reports on the subject. In a [1]report issued to the Secretary
of the Treasury last week, the GAO said that the IRS had met just 15
percent of the 105 previously reported recommendations where information
security is concerned. Taking a blunt approach, the GAO said that the IRS
'lacks reasonable assurance as to the accuracy of financial information
or the adequate protection of sensitive taxpayer information.' ... It
also said it would issue a limited distribution report to the IRS that
addresses details omitted from this most recent report due to the
sensitivity of the information."

via malicious PDF files [0]is signed with a valid certificate stolen from
the Government of Malaysia, in just the latest evidence that scammers are
using gaps in the security of digital certificates to help spread
malicious code. The malware, identified by F-Secure as a Trojan horse
program dubbed Agent.DTIW, was detected in a signed Adobe PDF file by the
company's virus researchers recently. The malicious PDF was signed using
a valid digital certificate for mardi.gov.my, the Agricultural Research
and Development Institute of the Government of Malaysia. According to
F-Secure, the Government of Malaysia confirmed that the certificate was
legitimate and had been stolen 'quite some time ago.'"
