[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The WSJ reports that following three nights of
rioting and looting in London, Blackberry's messaging network and social
networking sites are being blamed by police, politicians and media
organizations for [1]helping rioters in London spread word about the next
hot spot . It's an 'encrypted, very secure, safe, fast, cheap, free, easy
way for disaffected urban youth to spread messages for the next targets,'
says Mike Butcher, editor of TechCrunch Europe and digital advisor to the
Mayor of London. But Ian Maude, an analyst at Enders Analysis, said it's
unfair to lay the blame on technology. 'Certainly, it's a lot easier for
people to communicate with each other in real time via some of these
services but that's a fact of life. They're not good or evil in
themselves, its the purposes for which people use them.' The Metropolitan
Police, known as Scotland Yard, say they are monitoring social media
sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM), the
maker of Blackberry smartphones, says it has 'engaged with the
authorities to assist in any way we can.'" An anonymous reader points out
that the rioters aren't the only ones using technology. London police
have begun [2]posting pictures on Flikr of people they'd like to
interview following the riots over the last few days.

between Samsung and Apple. From the article: "In a stunning and painful
decision for Samsung, Apple got a German court to [1]issue a preliminary
injunction against the Galaxy Tab. According to patent analyst and

jailbroken phones from using un-sanctioned tethering apps. Verizon will
now require users to be subscribed to a mobile tethering plan to be able
to use tethering at all." So which mobile company's actually any good for
3G tethering, voice service aside? My Virgin Mobile MiFi (bought under a
plan no longer available) is theoretically unlimited and "only"
$40/month, but has had too much downtime for my taste, and atrocious
customer service.

researchers presented exploits on Apple's [0]DHX authentication scheme
which can compromise all connected Macs on the LAN within minutes. 'If we
go into an enterprise with a Mac and run this tool we will have dozens or
hundreds of passwords in minutes,' Stamos said. Macs are fine as long as
you run them as little islands, but once you hook them up to each other,

evolve into platforms. Mozilla's director of Firefox engineering John
Nightingale gave some insight on the past, present, and future of Mozilla
and outlined why Firefox still matters. While Mozilla is accused of
[1]copying features from [2]other browsers, the company says the opposite
is the case. Nightingale says that a future Firefox will [3]give a user
much more control over what he does on the Internet and that Mozilla
plans on competing with the ideal of an [4]open web against siloed
environments." Chrome may have a nice interface and be a bit faster than
Firefox's [5]rendering engine, but if Firefox failed as a project I'd
miss its [6]Emacs-like [7]extensibility (something all other browsers
lack).

and [1]final test of its hypersonic Falcon aircraft, which is capable of
hitting speeds up to Mach 20, or about 13,000MPH. The Falcon Hypersonic
Technology Vehicle 2 is scheduled to launch Wednesday between 7:00am ���
1:00 pm PDT from Vandenberg AFB, Calif., aboard an Air Force Minotaur IV
rocket. The rocket delivers the Falcon to a starting point high in the
atmosphere, where its engine ignite, and, if all goes well, it will blast
through the air for about a half hour, DARPA says."

criminals in California. From the article: "A California appeals court is
striking down a voter-approved measure requiring every adult arrested on
a felony charge to submit a DNA sample. The First District Court of
Appeal in San Francisco said [0]Proposition 69 amounted to
[1]unconstitutional, warrantless searches of arrestees. More than 1.6
million samples have been taken following the law's 2009 implementation.
Only about a half of those arrested in California are convicted." Note
that the State can still appeal the ruling; according to the article, the
Attorney General's office has made no comment as to whether they will do
so.

[1]copyright trolls, there haven't been too many stories of either being
sanctioned for abusive or extortion-like practices... until now. The
Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (one level below the Supreme
Court) has [2]approved over $600,000 in sanctions against a lawyer for a
patent troll, saying that filing over a hundred lawsuits, each of which
was followed up almost immediately with offers to settle at fees much
cheaper than it would cost to fight, has the 'indicia of extortion.' Now
if only judges started doing that more often."

In an interview with AllthingsD, the head of Nokia's US operations
declared that Nokia will be [0]focusing exclusively on Windows Phone
devices in North America. Reasons cited include the low profit margins of
the ubiquitous low-end [1]Series 40 devices and lackluster sales of
Symbian based devices. This also means that the [2]N9 won't be making it
to North America either.

infringes the aforementioned patent." The company in question is a bit

recently [0]filed a lawsuit that appears to be [1]boomeranging in the
worst possible way. A little-noticed pseudonymous blogger respectfully
disagreed with Cooley's self-awarded number-2 ranking, nationwide (well,
perhaps not so respectfully), and had a few other choice things to say.
So, Cooley went ahead and hired some lawyers (who had graduated from
Georgetown and the University of Michigan) to file a lawsuit to unmask
the blogger. And EFF cooperating attorney John Hermann got involved. "

Facebook amid fears that the services are being used by terrorists to
plan attacks. The request suggests that the Indian government is trying
to broaden the scope of its online surveillance for national security.
Under new rules to the country's IT Act that came into force earlier this
year, websites and service providers are required to provide government
security agencies with information on private accounts, including
passwords, on request without a court order."

of names, photos, birthdays and biometrics called Watchlist Service,
duplicated from the FBI's Terrorist Screening Database, which has proven
not to be accurate many times in the past. DHS wants to exempt the
Watchlist Service from Privacy Act provisions, meaning [0]you will never
know if you are wrongfully listed. Privacy groups worried about
inaccurate info and mission creep have filed a protest, arguing the
Privacy Act says DHS must notify subject of government surveillance. DHS
has admitted that it 'does not control the accuracy of the information in
system of records' and that 'individuals do not have an opportunity to
decline to provide information.' Additionally, the DHS Watchlist Service
attempts to circumvent privacy protections established by the Privacy
Act. Who's watching the watchers?"

their plans for the future of embedded graphics. From the article: "'If
you're looking at the visual experience that we can deliver on a mobile,

maths, because we have an increasing screen resolution and we have
increasing content complexity, and we have to do it all in pretty low

pages to other malicious sites. Part of the problem is that these

[1]made a major new release. The main highlight is support for [2]SMB 2.0
