high school teacher in Mission Viejo, California [0]may not be sued for
making hostile remarks about religion in his classroom. The decision
stems from a lawsuit filed by a student charging that the teacher's
hostile remarks about creationism and religious faith violated a First
Amendment mandate that the government remain neutral in matters of
religion. A three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals
ruled unanimously that the lawsuit must be thrown out of court because
the teacher was entitled to immunity."

that 90 percent of people in his studies [1]don't know how to use
CTRL/Command + F to find a word in a document or web page. 'I do these
field studies and I can't tell you how many hours I've sat in somebody's
house as they've read through a long document trying to find the result
they're looking for,' says Russell, [2]who has studied thousands of
people on how they search for stuff. 'At the end I'll say to them, "Let
me show one little trick here," and very often people will say, "I can't
believe I've been wasting my life!"' Just like we learn to skim tables of
content or look through an index or just skim chapter titles to find what
we're looking for, we need to teach people about this CTRL+F thing, says
Alexis Madrigal. 'I probably use that trick 20 times per day and yet the
vast majority of people don't use it at all,' writes Madrigal. 'We're
talking about the future of almost all knowledge acquisition and yet
[3]schools don't spend nearly as much time on this skill as they do on
other equally important areas.'"

spreading quickly online that HP is going to clear out its vast TouchPad
inventory by dropping the price to an offer you can't refuse. Rumor has
it that beginning Saturday [1]the 16Gb TouchPad will be $99, and the 32Gb
TouchPad will be a measly $149. 'It is actually a fairly capable tablet.
It's just not an iPad 2,' writes Bradley. 'For $500 it was a joke. For
$300 it was still a shady deal. For $99 it's a steal.' HP has learned the
hard way, and quickly pulled the plug on its tablet, [2]proving that HP
never had a solid tablet or mobile strategy and that it was really just
looking for an excuse to get out. 'The reality is that my Best Buy is
swimming in unsold HP TouchPad inventory,' adds Bradley. 'I went out
tonight and picked mine up at the regular $400 price to beat the rush.
Situations like this are [3]why they invented price matching. I can just
go back with my receipt once the fire sale starts and get the price
adjusted and the difference refunded.'"

for a mid-sized hotel. They have already selected Comcast to provide a
100mbps connection, which unfortunately must come in at one corner of the
~5-acre property. The hotel plans to provide this service for free, so
there is no need for any type of billing management system, though it
should be secured enough that the parking lot does not become a free
Wi-Fi hotspot. Additionally, there is no ethernet infrastructure in
place. The existing APs (hidden away in proprietary encasements) seem to
be connected via telephone lines and the owners have strongly indicated
they would prefer that no new wiring be installed. Have any Slashdotters
implemented similar systems? Specifically, what hardware did you use and
what special considerations should I take in designing this system?"

the Wall Street Journal that [0]software is 'eating the world.' He argues
that software's importance to the economy is being underestimated, and
will become much more evident in the near future. Quoting: 'But too much
of the debate is still around financial valuation, as opposed to the
underlying intrinsic value of the best of Silicon Valley's new companies.
My own theory is that we are in the middle of a dramatic and broad
technological and economic shift in which software companies are poised
to take over large swathes of the economy. More and more major businesses
and industries are being run on software and delivered as online
services���from movies to agriculture to national defense. Many of the
winners are Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurial technology companies
that are invading and overturning established industry structures. Over
the next 10 years, I expect many more industries to be disrupted by

'tries to have it all,' according to a Boston newspaper. The co-owner of
an independent bookstore near Cambridge considered boycotting Amazon's
new line of books, complaining, 'They are a huge competitor, and they
don't collect sales tax, giving them an unfair advantage.' A children's
bookstore noted that 'the pie is getting cut into fewer pieces. I'd be
nervous if I were an adult book publisher.' Borders bookstore has already
declared bankruptcy, leaving The Daily Show to joke that bookstores

history' museum where future generations can learn what a 'magazine rack'

the PS Vita and the details have confirmed most fans' hopes instead of
their fears. The heart of the system is [1]an ARM-developed Cortex A9
chip with four cores and a PowerVR SGX GPU. The screen is a 5-inch OLED
capacitive touch-screen (with multi-touch) and a resolution of 960 x 544.
The system [2]will include 512MB of RAM and an additional 128MB of
discrete VRAM. There will be front and rear cameras capable of 60fps at
VGA resolution (640 x 480)."

leakymails.blogspot.com. According to Google, [0]many ISPs have simply
blocked the IP 216.239.32.2 instead of using a targeted DNS filter. Over
a million blogs are hosted by Blogger at this IP. Freedom of speech
advocate Jillian York wrote, 'IP blocking is [1]a blunt method of
filtering content that can erase from view large swaths of innocuous
sites by virtue of the fact that they are hosted on the same IP address
as the site that was intended to be censored. One such example of
overblocking by IP address can be found in India, where the IP blocking

were plugged in, or simply rebooted."

researchers who found that Microsoft and several other high-profile
companies were using a controversial technique to keep persistent cookies
on users' PCs to track their movements, Microsoft says it has
[0]discontinued the practice of using so-called 'supercookies.' In July,
Jonathan Mayer, a graduate student at Stanford, revealed that some
companies were still employing techniques that enabled browser history
sniffing, which give the companies information on what sites users have
visited and what links they've clicked on. The research also found that
some companies were using cookies that re-spawn even after users have
deleted them. Microsoft was using this technique on one of its sites,
MSN.com, and now [1]the company said that it is no longer doing so."
