An anonymous reader writes "Firefox has gotten so large that it cannot be
compiled with [0]PGO on a 32-bit linker anymore, due to the [1]virtual
memory limitation of 3 GB. This problem had happened last year with 2 GB,
which was worked around by adding a/3GB switch to the Windows build
servers. Now the problem is back, and [2]things aren't quite that simple
anymore." This only affects the [3]inbound branch, but from the looks of
it new code is no longer being accepted until they can trim things from
the build to make it work again. The long term solution is to build the
32-bit binaries on a 64-bit system.

obtained by his ex-girlfriend by blogging about her mental health and
sexual issues, and sending links to posts on the blog to her family,
friends, and co-workers. The judge then extended the restraining order by
50 years, ordered the guy never to write about his ex on the Internet and
[0]ordered him to delete the blog he created. Even though there was no
evidence that what he had written was false, the judge said the
ex-girlfriend's 'right to be free from harassment' [1]outweighed the
guy's 'right to free speech.' 'I believe it's rare, if not unprecedented,
for a court to order an entire blog deleted,' says technology [2]law
professor Eric Goldman."

DemonGenius writes "I'm in the midst of a major rollout of one of our
primary internal applications at work and we have a beta version
available for all the staff to use. The problem here is most of the staff
don't know how to send reports meaningful enough to get us devs started
on solving their problems without constant back and forth correspondence
that wastes both developer time and theirs. Some common examples are:
screenshots of the YSOD that don't include the page URL, scaled
screenshots that are unreadable, the complaint that wants to be a bug
report but is still just a complaint, etc. From the user's perspective,
they just send an email, but that email registers in our tracking system.
Any thoughts on how to get the non-devs sending us descriptive and/or
meaningful reports? Does anyone here have an efficient and user-friendly
bug tracking system/policy/standard at their workplace? How does it
work?"

New submitter Bad_Feeling sends in a followup to the story we discussed
on Monday about a new site that scanned a few popular torrent trackers
and [0]linked torrents to IP addresses. The folks at TorrentFreak decided
to [1]check IP addresses belonging to major companies in the
entertainment industry and published lists of pirated files from several,
including Fox, Sony, and NBC Universal. Of course, they used the
information to make a slightly different point than the industry usually
does: "By highlighting the above our intention is not to get anyone into
trouble, and for that reason we masked out the end of the IP addresses to
avoid a witch hunt. An IP address is not a person, IP addresses can be
shared among many people, and anyone can be behind a keyboard at any
given time."

(PDF) which tries to answer some questions about how their system
operates. Also, after reports of the FBI [1]using Carrier IQ data, the
company responded by saying, '[2]Carrier IQ has never provided any data
to the FBI. If approached by a law enforcement agency, we would refer
them to the network operators.' Additionally, the EFF just released a
report which says [3]they believe keystroke data 'is in fact being
inadvertently transmitted to some third parties,' but they would like to
study carrier profiles to verify information." Reader Trailrunner7 adds
that Carrier IQ's report indicates "under some limited circumstances its
software will [4]log the contents of SMS messages sent to a user's phone,
but that that the contents of those messages would not be human readable.

An anonymous reader writes "NVIDIA has announced they have
[0]'open-sourced' their new CUDA compiler so that their GPGPU platform
can be brought to new architectures. NVIDIA's [1]CUDA compiler is based
upon [2]LLVM. At the moment though they seem to be restricting the source
code's access to [3]'qualified' individuals.' The official press release
[4]implies wider access to the source will happen later. It so happens
that a few days ago AMD [5]opened their OpenCL backend and [6]added
initial support to the Free Software r600 driver.

California 4:00 PM local time Sunday afternoon (Dec 11). Over the past 3
days it [1]managed to cross the United States and then the Atlantic
Ocean. The balloon passed the coastline of Spain about 12:40 AM (US
Eastern Standard Time) Wednesday morning (Dec 14). It has since popped
and landed in the Mediterranean Sea. This is a huge accomplishment. The
[2]previous distance record was about 3,300 miles. This one traveled
about 6,200 miles. Enthusiasts tracked the balloon via the web throughout
most of the trip thanks to a ham radio technology called [3]APRS which
received data transmitted by the balloon and [4]logged it to databases on
the internet. Thanks to APRS stations around the world (some of whom
changed their normal listening frequencies to help with the tracking
process) data was available for most of the flight."
