gigantic and prolific Bakken oil fields of Montana and North Dakota have
already helped move the U.S. into [1]third place among world oil
producers, and according to Harold Hamm, CEO of Continental Resources,
the 14th-largest oil company in America, if fully developed the field in
Bakken contains 24 billion barrels, doubling America's proven oil
reserves. One reason for America's abundant supply of oil and natural gas
has been the development of new drilling techniques, including '[2]horizontal
drilling,' which allows rigs to reach two miles into the ground and then
spread horizontally by thousands of feet." Not surprisingly, Hamm
considers some of the current administration's [3]loans and subsidies for
alternative energy ventures to be misplaced.

unearthed an amazing video where the head of WIPO, the UN agency
responsible for 'promoting' intellectual property, suggests that Tim
Berners-Lee [0]should have patented HTML and licensed it to all users.
Amazingly this is done on camera and in front of the head of CERN and the
Internet Society, who look on in disbelief."

The iPad has sold extremely well at a starting price of $500 but "that
kind of pricing doesn't work for many tablet vendors," says a story at
CNET. And [0]recent price drops reflect this. It's been a rough year for
tablet makers, and it's not even Black Friday yet.

achievement' of a man Steve Jobs idolized. Edwin Land was the creator of

Perhaps to no one's surprise, the just-announced iPhone 4S has been been
leaping off the shelves ... in advance of it ever hitting shelves at all.
In fact, as reported by numerous sources (here's [0]the WSJ's version),
the company's pre-launch inventory has all been sold ��� and they only
started taking the orders on Friday.

first phone to be delivered with [1]Ice Cream Sandwich. "This version of
the Nexus Series (Google's Android flag bearer) runs the next version of
Android: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This version is meant to combine
Honycomb (Android 3.0) with Gingerbread(Android 2.3) into one OS, that
will run on all devices. In addition to the merger of the two OS's, it
[2]also changes the Android UI a bit. One major change, is that the icons
and the UI is a lot more sophisticated and clean, making even iOS look
old and clunky. Also, it removes the requirement for Android phones to
have hard/soft-hard mixed buttons, in favor of allowing manufacturers to
use whichever type of button they wish. Also, it adds a soft button on
the lock screen, to go straight to the camera app."

egg on its face, after a supposedly redacted PDF detailing secrets
related to air defence radar systems was published on a parliamentary
website. The problem? Whoever did the redacting [0]simply changed the
sensitive text to black on a black background, making it possible for
anyone to access the information simply by cutting-and-pasting. The
incident is particularly embarrassing for the Ministry, as six months ago
precisely the same security screw-up occurred ��� that time related to
sensitive information about nuclear submarines."

background: I use [1]Acronis to create custom recovery partitions for my
personal computers that include all my software and drivers. I also work
for a growing computer repair shop which has ventured into eBay sales of
refurbished computers. We receive the machines with wiped hard drives.
Since we get multiples of each model, we load everything on one then make
images with Clonezilla. It would be nice to set up recovery partitions as
well. Acronis is out of the question, since it would cost for a license
for each machine. Do any Slashdotters know of any FOSS options?"

be an internal monitoring system employed by the military. According to
security researcher Miles Fidelman, there are vendors that sell security
monitoring packages to the Defense Department which are 'essentially
rootkits that do, among other things, key logging.' The virus is a
keylogger that was found at pilot stations, and could be keeping tabs on
keystrokes used by pilots to control the UAVs, found Wired's Danger Room
blog. Fidelman adds, 'I kind of wonder if the virus that folks are
fighting is something that some other part of DoD deployed
intentionally.'"
