around Google+, it seems like most [0]Google+ users just wanted to see
the platform before returning to Facebook. 'Google has lost over 60 per
cent of its active users on its social network Google+, according to a
report by Chitika Insights, raising questions about how well it is doing
against its rival, Facebook. Despite the clear interest in an alternative
to Facebook, it does not appear that the people joining are staying
around and actively using the web site. Google's problem is not getting
users in the first place, it seems, but rather keeping them after they
have arrived. For now it appears that a lot of users are merely curious
about Google+, but return to the tried and tested format of Facebook when
the lustre fades. The problem is that Facebook is not going to rest on
its laurels while Google attempts to get the advantage. Already it has
added features inspired by Google+, particularly in terms of improving
the transparency of its privacy options.'"

An anonymous reader writes "There are two types of office workers in the
world ��� those who file their emails in folders, and those who use search.
Well, it looks like the searchers are smarter. A 354-user study by [0]IBM
research found that [1]users who just searched their inbox found emails
slightly faster than users who had filed them by folder. Add the time
spent filing and the searchers easily come out on top. Apparently the
filers are using their inbox as a to-do list rather than wanting to
categorize information to find it more easily."

embarrassed those who didn't do well."

that converts Dart code into JavaScript. Language-wise, its features are
unlikely to knot your panties: there are classes and interfaces, it is
optionally typed (you can switch between untyped prototype code to an
enterprise app with typing), the syntax is very lackluster, there's a
very strong concurrency model, and Google is promising lots of juicy
libraries that can be leveraged by developers. Basically, the language
isn't meant to be exciting: in Google's own words, it's designed to be

Sonic pressed for the right to inform Mr. Appelbaum of the secret court
orders, according to people familiar with the investigation.' The

to November 1, 2009, which is believed to be the month that WikiLeaks

Several readers have sent word that "tens of millions of BlackBerry users
in Europe, the Middle East and Africa have been [0]unable to receive or
send emails and messages through their phones, following an outage at the
server systems of parent company Research In Motion." RIM has confirmed
that [1]they're aware of the problem and working to restore service. A
former RIM employee said to The Guardian, "They didn't start looking at
scalability until about 2007, when they had around 8M active devices. The
attitude was, 'We're going to grow and grow but making sure our
infrastructure can support it isn't a priority.' They have their own
clunky infrastructure to do something that you don't really need a clunky
infrastructure to do anymore."

Slate has reprinted the [0]piece that Ron Rosenbaum wrote for Esquire in
1971, explaining to the world that there was an underground movement of
people hacking the phone system. (Rosenbaum is now a columnist for
Slate.) According to the article's new introduction and [1]followup piece
by Rosenbaum reflecting on its impact ��� and to the New York Times
obituary for Steve Jobs ��� this article inspired Jobs and Wozniak to start
building blue boxes themselves, an effort that made them several thousand
dollars.

one step closer to creating the next generation of computer chips using
graphene. By sandwiching two sheets of graphene with another

original internal open source dude, thinks companies building clouds
won't be able to keep up if they don't participate in open source
communities because that's where the developers building new cloud
infrastructure are doing most of their work. The main concerns standing
in the way for both cloud builders and users of free software are legal
fears, he contends. These include fears of the GPL's copyleft provision
and fears of being sued by downstream users. Is he right ... or full of

against RFID cards, as [2]German researchers revealed a way to clone one
type of card currently used for a variety of purposes, from transit fares
to opening doors in NASA facilities." According to the article, "NXP
Semiconductors, which owns Mifare, [3]put out an alert to customers
warning that the security had been cracked on its MIFARE DESFire
(MF3ICD40) smartcard but saying that model would be discontinued by the
end of the year and encouraging customers to upgrade to the EV1 version
of the card." This response [4]may sound familiar.
