A few weeks ago, we discussed the discovery of [0]a diamond planet in
orbit around a pulsar. One of the researchers behind the discovery has
now written a followup article about reaction to the news from the media
and laypeople. Quoting: "The attention we received was 100% positive, but
how different that could have been. How so? Well, [1]we could have been
climate scientists. ... Instead of sitting back and basking in the glory,
I suspect we���d find a lot of commentators, many with no scientific
qualifications, pouring scorn on our findings. People on the fringe of
science would be quoted as opponents of our work, arguing that it was
nothing more than a theory yet to be conclusively proven. There would be
doubt cast on the interpretation of our data and conjecture about whether
we were ���buddies��� with the journal referees. If our opponents dug really
deep they might even find that I���d once written a paper on a similar
topic that had to be retracted. Before long our credibility and findings
would be under serious question. But luckily we���re not climate
scientists."

The 13,000 sq mile U.S. Radio Quiet Zone is an area in West Virginia
where all wireless transmissions are banned because of the large number
of radio telescopes located there. (This [0]official page shows a map of
the Zone; an [1]old Wired article is fascinating reading.) These
high-tech telescopes have attracted unlikely neighbors, people who claim
to have Wi-Fi allergies. In recent years, scores of people have moved to
the area to [2]escape the "damage" that electromagnetic fields can cause
them. From the article: "Diane Schou is unable to hold back the tears as
she describes how she once lived in a shielded cage to protect her from
the electromagnetic radiation caused by waves from wireless
communication. 'It's a horrible thing to have to be a prisoner,' she
says. 'You become a technological leper because you can't be around
people. It's not that you would be contagious to them ��� it's what they're
carrying that is harmful to you.'"

the time to transmit packets from London to New York. The Hibernian

financial community will be lining up to pay premium rates to use the new

Jeremy Erwin writes "A columnist for Slate asks why [0]there aren't any
civilians in today's military shooting games. Quoting: 'Mostly, they
don't want to face the consequences of players' bad behavior. In an
interview with the website Rock Paper Shotgun, Battlefield 3's executive
producer Patrick Bach explained that he doesn't "want to see videos on
the Internet where people shoot civilians. That's something I will
sanitize by removing that feature from the game." Bach believes that
video games are serious business but that players' irreverence is holding
back the form. "If you put the player in front of a choice where they can
do good things or bad things, they will do bad things, go [to the] dark
side because people think it's cool to be naughty, they won't be caught,"
he said.'" (Note that there are civilians in Battlefield 3, [1]you just
can't kill them, accidentally or otherwise. Despite this, the author's
point stands: "By removing civilians from the picture, developers like
Bach are trying to reap the benefits of a real-life setting without
grappling with the reality of collateral damage.")

necessary to build the largest x86_64-based supercomputer on the east
coast of the U.S. (at least until someone takes the title away from us).
It's spec'ed to start with 1200 dual-socket six-core servers. We

(fairly small) HPC. We intend to continue this usage, but to also open it
up for new uses (energy comes to mind). Additionally, we'd like to lease
access to recoup some of our costs. So, what's the best Linux distro for
something of this size and scale? Any that include a chargeback
option/module? Additionally, due to cost contracts, we have to choose
either [0]InfiniBand or 10Gb Ethernet for the backend: which would
Slashdot readers go with if they had to choose? Either way, all nodes
will have four 1Gbps Ethernet ports. Finally, all nodes include only a
basic onboard GPU. We intend to put powerful GPUs into the PCI-e slot and
open up the new HPC for GPU related crunching. Any suggestions on the

headquarters, offering hands on time with the company's upcoming
Bulldozer-based FX-line of processors. Many of the details disclosed are
still under NDA embargo, but [1]AMD is allowing a sneak peek today to go
along with a claimed Guinness World Record announcement. A team of
overclocking enthusiasts and AMD engineers had a sampling of early AMD FX
processors running at around 5GHz with high-end air and water-cooling, in
the 6GHz range with phase-change cooling, and well over 8GHz on
liquid-nitrogen and liquid-helium setups. Voltages of over 1.9v were used
as well for some of the more extreme tests. The team had access to dozens
of early FX processors and methodically worked through a batch of chips
until ultimately hitting a peak of 8.429GHz using liquid-helium, breaking
the previous world record of 8.309GHz for modern processor frequency."

Electronic Arts has announced that the popular [0]1993 cyberpunk game
Syndicate is getting a remake. This time, instead of being a tactical
action game, [1]it'll be a first-person shooter, and co-op play is
planned. The Guardian's games blog sums up what the new Syndicate will
need in order to succeed: "The biggest challenge will to replicate
Bullfrog's brilliant story-telling and its keen eye for cyberpunk
details. The original titles were also fascinating for their amorality ���
players were neither rewarded nor penalized for gunning down civilians or
destroying vast areas of real estate, reflecting the wider themes of
urban nihilism and social breakdown. Fans certainly won't be appeased by
a vaguely near-future shoot-'em-up with some hackneyed hacking mini-games
tossed in for cyber-credentials."

planned settlement between Google and book publishers still [0]on
indefinite hold, a legal battle by proxy has started. Google partnered
with many libraries at US universities in order to gain access to the
works it wants to digitize. Now, several [1]groups that represent book
authors have filed suit against those universities, attempting to block
both digital lending and an orphaned works project. The suit is being
brought by the Authors' Guild, its equivalents in Australia, Quebec, and
the UK, and a large group of individual authors. Its target: some major
US universities, including Michigan, the University of California system,
and Cornell. These libraries partnered with Google to get their book
digitization efforts off the ground and, in return, Google has provided
them with digital copies of the works. These and many other universities
have also become involved with the HathiTrust, an organization set up to
help them archive and distribute digital works; the HathiTrust is also
named as a defendant."

donate their spare CPU cycles to help create a massive grid computing
engine to [0]process terabytes of radio astronomy data as part of
[1]theSkyNet project. It will be used for, among other things, processing
the huge amount of data expected to flow off Australia's forthcoming
[2]Square Kilometre Array telescope." One can only assume that "other
things" will include achieving sentience and finding John Connor.

between Hotfile and a few movie studios. From the article: "Hotfile has
sued Warner Bros. for fraud and abuse. Hotfile accuses the movie studio
of [1]systematically abusing its anti-piracy tool by taking down hundreds
of titles they don't hold the copyrights to, including open source
software. Among other things, Hotfile is looking for damages to
compensate the company for the losses they suffered." Near the end of the
article it is mentioned that files taken down by the tool were replaced
with links to legally procure similar works from Warner Bros.

shuttle tiles and astronaut food to eligible schools and universities to
preserve history. The lightweight space shuttle tiles protected the
shuttles from extreme temperatures when the orbiters re-entered the
Earth's atmosphere, while space food was precooked such that
refrigeration is not required and is ready to eat or could be prepared
simply by adding water or by heating." I wish NASA would finance future
missions by selling interestingly packaged astronaut foods in general --
other than the ice cream, I've seen it only in museum displays.

[0]planning to jump into the tablet market with a device dedicated to
gaming. '[GameStop President Tony Bartel said] this week that Android was
capable of running what he called a "GameStop-certified gaming platform"
and that GameStop would be self-branding existing tablet hardware built
by an unspecified third-party manufacturer. ... GameStop will sell its
gaming tablet alongside consoles and handheld gaming devices from Sony,
Microsoft, Nintendo, and others, he said.' There's no release date yet,
but the device is currently being tested by consumers. It will apparently
ship with its own wireless controller."

Jeff Bezos is [0]seeking patents related to his 'Blue Origin' commercial
space venture. Blue Origin was recently in the news when Bezos quietly
admitted that its second test capsule launch in August [1]went out of
control at 47,000 feet. The head scratcher with the patents, according to
Design News, is that one is for a two-stage rocket, which doesn't seem
particularly novel. What is unique, and questionable as to whether it
will work, is [2]patent application 20110017872 for 'Sea Landing of Space
Launch Vehicles and Associated Systems and Methods.' This one has a
reusable rocket going up into suborbital flight, then the booster stage
reenters the earth's atmosphere in a tail-first orientation and lands
upright on a ship (boat)."

Google [0]announced today the availability of Flight Search, the product
of their [1]acquisition of ITA Software last year. "Starting today, when
you search for flight information on Google, for example 'flights from
Chicago to Denver,' you will see a 'Flights' link in the left-hand panel.
This link leads to our new [2]Flight Search feature, and is offered in
addition to the flight schedules which have been available since May."
Google says they're continuing to develop the service, and added that the
results are "not influenced by any paid relationships."

news release about the DC Circuit Court awarding them attorneys fees
yesterday. They are to [0]receive $21,482 in attorneys fees for an open
government lawsuit against DHS that ultimately released documents about
DHS's airport body scanner program. EPIC used these released documents in
[1]EPIC v. DHS, another lawsuit that attempts to end the use of airport
body scanners. At the end of an e-mailed version of this news release
(EPIC Alert 18.18, not yet posted on the Web), EPIC states that '[2]EPIC
requested an en banc review of the court's decision not to suspend, but,
on September 12, 2011, the court declined the request.' Is this the end
of EPIC v. DHS, or does this simply open the door for an appeal to the
